Fellow Skålleagues

A message from Skål International, Washington DC President,

James J. Enright

Wonderful April Skål Dinner at Hilton McLean, Tysons Corner.

I want to thank Brian Kelleher, GM at Hilton McLean Tysons Corner for the wonderful reception and dinner on April 25th. The food and service were outstanding.

I also need to mention that our Treasurer, Barry Biggar, CDME, President/CEO Fairfax County provided a warm welcome to his beloved County and updated our member & guests with the latest happenings in the region. Thank you both for a great evening in Fairfax County.

Young Travel Professionals are a must in our industry if we are to survive

The travel and tourism industry is one of the largest industries in the United States, making a total contribution of 1.47 trillion U.S. dollars to GDP in 2016. The industry was forecasted to contribute more than 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars by 2025. In 2014, U.S. travel and tourism entered the spotlight when the US Government took on a campaign to promote the industry and make the airport entry process easier in order to attract more international visitors. The campaign focused on increasing international travel spending within the country, creating more jobs for U.S. residents as a result. This must continue and we must not have a travel ban.

There were 85 million non-resident visitors to the United States in 2016, with New York City proving to be the
most popular city destination. Of those visitors, travelers from Canada contributed the most to international travel spending at around 26 billion U.S. dollars. Visitors from China and Mexico also spent generously. However, international travel spending was dwarfed by domestic travel spending – U.S. residents spent 802 billion U.S. dollars traveling their homeland in 2016.

The most popular destination type for U.S. travelers was beach locations in 2016, closely followed by vacations in the center of a city. In the same year, around nine percent of U.S. travelers cited a cruise as their ideal destination type. Despite this seemingly low share of travelers, the U.S. was the leading source market for cruises in the world in 2014. In comparison to the second largest cruise source market Germany, the United States had over five times more cruise passengers in that year.

Skål International USA plays a large role in helping the US economy as our members are involved with all aspects of the Travel & Tourism Industry. We need to add more young people to keep our organization alive and that includes the millennial generation, which will account for roughly 50 percent of the global workforce and, by 2025, nearly 75 percent of the workforce will be made up of millennial's.

Not only does Skål survival as a thriving organization rest on recruiting young members, we also want to capture younger clients for our business. In the travel & tourism industry, clients often like to book with someone in their age range. They have more confidence that someone their own age will be able to relate to what they want. I know experience counts, but we have to move with the times and our clients are dictating that change.

A job in the travel industry is not a hard sell. Travel planning can be a dream job for millennial workers, especially if it offers flexibility and travel perks. According to a recent Intelligence report, 70 percent of millennial respondents said that they want to visit every country, and 75 percent said they want to travel as much as possible. The most challenging aspect of recruiting young talent might just be getting the word out and this is where you as members of Skål DC can help.  What are you doing in your own office to recruit more Young Travel Professionals? We welcome them as members of Skål DC. Bring them to an event and expose them to our Skål organization.

I challenge each member to recruit one new Skålleague in 2017.

Auction Fundraising Event is ALMOST HERE!!    AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Skål Washington will once again be holding its Annual Auction and Fundraising Event on May 22!   Our member, Eric Pittfield, is looking forward to hosting Skål Washington back to the Holiday Inn Capitol for this fantastic event!   Our event is both a silent and live auction!  But it is only through donations that we can make this event a great success!  As of now, we are in desperate need of donation items!

Some wonderful fundraising auction items to consider donating are:

Hotel overnight stays

Spa packages

Restaurant gift certificates

DC sporting event tickets such as Redskins, Nationals, Capitals, DC United

Wine gift baskets – 2 bottles; include glasses, corkscrew, aerator

Theme gift baskets  - cooking items/ w/ pasta or sauces;  beach gear; movie with gift

certificates and popcorn holders and sodas; Keurig w/ coffee, cream, Bailey’s and

Theater or movie tickets

Amusement park tickets or weekend packages including hotel stay

Airline or train tickets

Wine bottles for the Wine Cork Pull

Paintings/ drawings

Collectibles – Lenox, Lladro, Faberge, Hummels, Franklin Mint

Tablecloth and place settings

Let’s be creative and REMEMBER,  the donations do not need to be local to DC …..  they can be from anywhere or used to go anywhere!  Perhaps you have a beach house you rent out or a cabin in the woods. Why not offer a weekly or weekend rental package?

The funds raised through our auction are used to support the Florimond Volkaert Fund (for Skål members that may need assistance), as well as our other charities such as Tourism Cares, Joe Neary Memorial Fund (fellow Skålleague whose charity supports a children’s home in Sri Lanka).  In addition, the funds are used towards offsetting club costs for sponsoring prospective new members and subsidizing some of our special events.  Please see the 2017 Auction Donation Form on our website.  All Auction Donation forms/ details have been extended now to Friday, May 12.   Please send email in advance with donation form arriving by May 12 to  Carol Betz, Executive Secretary,, so she can add to the auction listing/ website.

If you have any questions, please contact Carol; forms can be sent via email, but the items must be brought the night of the event.

And REMEMBER, this event is OPEN TO ALL!  So invite your friends, neighbors, and colleagues to come and join the fun!!  We look forward to having your support again for this exciting event!
