September 2016

From our President, James Enright

To fellow Skålleagues everywhere…

but particularly in DC.....

Review, rethink to achieve the goal of making Skål relevant, exciting!

“A Trusted voice in Travel & Tourism”

We need to showcase our Brand, which is Skål

  • ·       Increase awareness of Skål
  • ·       Fresh Ideas from young/old members
  • ·       Increase use of the Skål Logo
  • ·       We need to think “outside the box”
  • ·       Develop a framework for success

I am calling on all members to review the bullet points above and ask yourself-what can I do in my daily life of work and relaxation to develop the Skål Brand?

In my very first Newsletter (January 2016) one of my goals was to grow Skål DC membership and I asked the following of our members;

  • Maintain and expand membership in the Skål International Washington DC Club- I am asking each current member to recruit one new member (or more) during 2016. Membership forms available on the Website

Have you brought in a new member? What do you need from me or from the Board to help you recruit new members?

We are offering a special deal that any new qualified members introduced to the club can join now in 2016 and pay dues later in the year for 2017.

Mid-Atlantic Golf Challenge

The much anticipated Golf match with the Baltimore Club, took place on August 22nd at Compass Pointe GC in Pasadena MD.

We had beautiful weather for the day and some excellent play, tho' unfortunately there were no Golf Channel cameras on hand to record Captain Enright’s team’s success.

Baltimore played very well, apparently, but failed to hand-in their scorecards, so, by USGA rules, the new Mid-Atlantic Skål Golf Challenge Stein (that’s a mouthful), was graciously (and gratefully!) accepted by Captain James Enright, on behalf of the Washington team.

Randy Herron's 'Herron Printing & Graphics', kindly donated the trophy, which we'll defend against all-comers on future years!

Incidentally, it was great to see our New Jersey Skålleagues join the golf. Led by Jim Dwyer, they'd driven four hours to make the tee-time. Maybe they'll enter a team for the next Golf Challenge?

The team joined the Baltimore Club for their Annual Crab Feast in nearby Kurtz’s Beach, later that evening and much fun was had by all.

Passing of Judy Knorpp.

Judy Knorpp, wife of the late Dick Knorpp, who was President of our Club in 2004, passed away quietly last week. As many of you will remember, Dick died earlier this year, at his home in Naples, Florida.

Judy would prefer donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Naples Humane Society at https://hsnaples.org/ or by calling 239-643-1555

May she rest in Peace.

Spelling Lesson

What's the ring over the "a" in Skål called? The answer is krouzek. When added to the "a" it creates a distinct letter, the third last letter in the Swedish Alphabet.

We should all be using the proper spell of Skål when we use our name in correspondence.

Check "Useful Information about Us" , for more information on setting up Microsoft to recognize Skål  and how to add the krouzek to the "a" on a Mac

Successful Inaugural Skål Scholars Program

We had a very successful launch to our Skål Scholar Program on the week of August 22nd. During that week, the three chose Post Grad students from George Washington Business School, visited eight of our Skålleagues (Industry Hosts), spending between two and three hours with each of them, learning about their particular business and how they’ve reached their current positions and how they’re managing their day to day and long term responsibilities. The Hosts who participated were James Enright (Meeting Planner), Mary Peters (Online Travel Agency), Patricia Washington (Convention Bureau and Destination Sales), Mark Roche-Garland (Hotel Operations), Rick Wayland (Restaurant & Catering), Don Evans (Hotel Sales), Neil Amrine (Tour Operations) and Elliott Ferguson (Destination Sales and Marketing)

Our three Mentors, Bill Moyer, Barry Biggar and Philip Wood each met with their particular Scholar beforehand and shared their own career path with their mentee, coaching them on the visits that lay ahead of them as well, of course, as giving advice on the road ahead of them. One of our mentors was so impressed with his mentee that he offered her a part-time internship during her final year at GWU. Each of the Mentors was on-call for their mentee during the course of the week and met up with them again at the Friday Reception, that brought the week to a close.

Special recognition to Niamh Tallon, Stuart Levy and Chris Seek for setting-up a terrific program and a big thanks to our Mentors and our Industry Hosts!

Bill Croke will be presenting details of the Scholar Program at the Skål USA National Committee Meeting in Little Rock next week and there is every possibility that this program will go National, if not Global!

You’ll have the opportunity of meeting the Skål Scholars at our September Lobster Fest on September 20th at Columbia Island Marina, when they’ll receive their Scholar Certificates as well as hopefully be inducted as Young Skål Members.

Have you checked-out our Facebook Page yet? Most recent photos are always there including many from the recent Scholar's Week.

SKÅL International USA issues statement on Global Terrorism

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- SKÅL International USA strongly condemns the recent terror attacks around the globe. On behalf of the entire SKÅL International USA community, representing 2200 executives in the travel and tourism industry, SKÅL USA conveys its condolences and sympathy to the families and friends of the victims and to the Thai people and to all the people of the world who have been victimized by the recent terror attacks.

"Too many people all over the world have been the target of senseless and cowardly terrorist attacks for weeks now. Too many innocent people have been killed and maimed in the name of some misguided belief that terror can effect change. Terror strengthens the resolve of all decent, freedom loving peoples. Only by standing shoulder to shoulder we will defeat the evil that is terrorism.

"We will always promote and support global Travel and Tourism as we believe Tourism is fatal to prejudice and small mindedness," said SKÅL International USA President, John Mavros.
