Fellow Skålleagues

A message from Skål International, Washington DC President,

Andres Hayes

Dear Skålleagues,

I am extremely proud to share that Skål DC is recognized as a tourism organization by the city, alongside industry leaders. Last month, the DC Chamber of Commerce hosted its 2nd annual Hospitality Forum, and the theme was, “Innovations in Hospitality and Tourism.” The forum attracted more than 125 industry professionals, and Skål DC was well represented. I was invited again to chair the event, and one of my goals was to raise awareness about Skål. Our Skålleague Markus Platzer was on the roundtable; Carolyn Howell was a contributor to the event, and even though they were not present, three industry leaders/ Skål members sent representatives on their behalf: Destination DC President and CEO Elliott Ferguson, U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow, and Brand USA President and CEO Chris Thompson. Thanks to those Skålleagues who attended the event and showed their support.

Fiesta DC

On September 29, I was honored to represent our Club as Grand Marshall of the parade for the annual Fiesta DC, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. More than 8,000 attendees showed up to follow the parade route and cheered for their favorite country floats and extravaganza. Thanks to Ana Lopez and Steve Richer for joining me.

Happy Fall!  What a great event last month at the Columbia Island Marina as we enjoyed a beautiful evening on the water after the Hurricane Florence bands of rain.  We enjoyed seeing all of our members and their guests as well as the wonderful representation from our Baltimore Skål friends!  A big thank you to Guest Services for again hosting the lobster event and Eric Hotard and his team of “steamers” who did a great job preparing the crustaceans for us to enjoy!

KENYA – Skål International Congress 2018!  Your Executive Officers are enroute, and may already be, in Mombasa, Kenya representing Skål Washington at the 79th Skål World Congress!  The Congress officially ki8cks off and runs October 17-21 and Skål Washington will be well represented by President- Andres Hayes, Vice President- Morgan Maravich and Secretary- Barry Biggar.  While they will surely take in the sites and experience the wild on safari, it is not all fun and games.  They will find the real WILD as they vote on our behalf on many ongoing issues being discussed to continue to move Skål forward!   These Issues range from bylaws updating, to membership development, new club openings, offsetting increased expenses and where the next 2019 Congress will be awarded.  This Skål International Congress will again be represented by many members from all around the world! And one very exciting agenda item will be the announcement by Skål International of the Skål Club of the Year ….. we are hopeful that Skål Washington will be chosen.  Keep your eye on Facebook and Instagram for postings on their adventures!   More to follow upon their return; please keep them in your thoughts and prayers for safe travel and return!

NAASC Congress 2019 – HAWAII!  Start planning NOW to attend the NAASC 2019 Annual Meeting in Honolulu at the beautiful Sheraton Waikiki from April 25-28, 2019.  I recently visited Skål Hawaii Club and they are so excited to showcase Hawaii to Skål USA!   My visit happened to coincide with their monthly meeting date so I was able to attend their dinner at the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club!  I was presented with a Skål Hawaii banner as well as great food, drink and true Skål camaraderie!   Skål Hawaii has great plans for us for next April so visit their website, www.skalhawaii.net, to get more information.  And think about extending your trip to include some of the other beautiful islands Hawaii has to offer.

Fellow Skål members, it is now time to start our membership renewal for 2019.  Both the Skål USA and the Skål International dues for active members will be increasing for 2019 and while Skål Washington has absorbed the nominal increases over the past 3 years, we will now need to pass that increase along to our members.  Invoices will be generated in early November again through our Skål Washington website, www.skaldc.org.  2019 Dues costs will be:

Active membership - $245

Life/Retired Membership - $160

Young Skål  Membership - $50

All dues are to be paid in full by December 31, 2018.  Following that date, we will then be processing the club payment to Skål USA / International for all renewing members.  Your prompt payment is most appreciated!  Please contact Roxana Rivera or Carol Betz with any concerns or member status changes.
