Steve Richer-Skålleague of the Year 2016-2017

It is a great honor for Skål USA and our Skål Washington DC club that Steve Richer has received the distinguished Skålleague of the Year award at the 2017 Skål World Congress in Hyderabad.

Steve is a well-known visionary within the Skål community having been a member of five different Skål Clubs since 1986.

Starting as a member of SI Reno during his time as Nevada State Travel Director, Steve transferred to SI Philadelphia after accepting the position of President of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Bureau. He got Philadelphia to sponsor SI Atlantic City, where he became one of the charter members.

Moving next to Mississippi to serve as Director of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau, he transferred to SI New Orleans and tried to start a Skål Club in Mississippi, but could not get enough diversity of membership categories in that destination and continued his membership in SI New Orleans.

When his new position representing tour operators as a Capitol Hill lobbyist started, he transferred into SI Washington, where he has been an active member ever since.

Among his achievements in our Skål Washington DC club, he is a very active member of the EC Board and has personally recruited more than twenty-five members, including seven travel industry CEOs, two ambassadors to the United States, and a former United States Senator.  Additionally, he has been successful in making the membership of our Skål DC club culturally diverse by recruiting Skålleagues from many different backgrounds which has become a hallmark of our strength as a Travel & Tourism Organization.

Steve has also been an advocate to work with students, which resulted in our Skål Scholars program; increasing Skål’s presence at key trade shows, such as the ASTA Global Convention held last year in DC and IPW in Washington DC this past June. He also brought Skål USA leadership to town to develop relationships with key national trade organizations.  Skål International USA President John Mavros and Regional Vice President Tim Hemphill in September 2016 and the current Skål USA President Holly Powers in June 2017 at the IPW trade show for which Steve organized almost all of the appointments.

He organized a similar visit in 2015 for SI President Salih Cene and Skål USA President Martha McClintock and was awarded a Certificate of Merit by President Salih at the Skål World Congress.

During his tenure as Skål Region 1 Vice President in 2015, he was very active in both in staying in touch with our regional clubs and his being an advocate for a stronger national presence on tourism policy matters, working with other organizations, and building Skål, both in the United States and worldwide.  In 2016 & 2017 he was the key driver on re-establishing Skål International Addis Ababa in Ethiopia after an almost forty-year absence by enlisting the support of two of our Skål DC members Ethiopian Ambassador Girma Birru and Ethiopian Airlines North America Regional Manager Nigusu Wordofa.

Steve was also responsible for setting up the largest ever Twinning ceremony of Skål India Clubs with Skål USA clubs which took place at the Skål World Congress in Hyderabad.  Skål Washington DC is now twinned with New Delhi-Nairobi & Addis Ababa.
