Fellow Skålleagues

A message from Skål International, Washington DC President,

Andres Hayes

Dear Skalleagues,

As you know, our goals for this year include broadening our membership and earning the International Skål Club of the Year Award. To be successful, we must overcome some of the challenges specific to our business and locale: Many people in our networks are itinerants and adventurers who often relocate to different cities. This affects both new member recruitment and current member retention.

Tourism is growing in DC and Northern Virginia. And our industry plays a vital role. Let’s leverage the economic contributions of hospitality and tourism as a means of building our membership. In this, as in all other endeavors, we need your hands-on help and the insights from your professional experience in the field.

Below is a recap of the achievements that have positioned us within reach of the Club of the Year distinction:
    1.    We were the sponsor Club for the reinstatement of the Addis Ababa Club.
    2.    After 17th years we were responsible for creation of a new club.  Skal International Club Richmond.
    3.    Our club is one of the most diverse clubs in the world in terms of Industry categories including senators and ambassadors.
    4.    Loyal contributor to the Florimond Volkcaert Fund
    5.    We must show a net increase of 10% in membership or a minimum of 10 new Active members for larger Clubs (from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018). Please help us achieve this goal.

I am encouraging you to join us on March 14 and invite potential members that follow the following requirements.

    •    Individuals that are currently occupying a post of responsibility in the Tourism industry for more than five years, without regard for Race, Sex or Religion.
    •    They must be active in one of the different industry categories:  airlines, airlines assn, airport, attraction, baggage forwarders, car hire, coach company, congress centre, consultants, destination management co., golf course, holiday camp, hotel, hotel assn, inbound tour operator, inland waterways, maritime company, medical tourism, outbound tour operator, port authority, prof. congress organisers, railways, reservation system, restaurant, spa, sports tourism, travel agents, travel agents assn, travel insurance, travel media, travel training.

See you on March 14th and help us bring home the International Club of the year award.

A Word from Skal USA

Skalleague Steve Richer is serving on the Skal USA Executive Committee and shares national Skal news with the club monthly.

Skal USA will make its voice heard at Destination Capitol Hill.  On March 21-22, Skal USA leaders and other Skalleagues from around the nation will participate in the annual effort to educate Congress on key tourism issues, particularly support for Brand USA, maintaining our national parks, and improving infrastructure.  Skal USA President Burcin Turkkan of Skal Atlanta will be here to lead the delegation.  She will also be the featured speaker at our March 21 club dinner meeting.

Visiting Skalleagues, including Skal International Councillor Holly Powers of Skal Boston, are expected to attend our gathering, too.
