Fellow Skålleagues

A message from Skål International, Washington DC President,

Andres Hayes

Do we have a voice when it comes to tourism-related issues?

For many years, our club has prioritized one of the Skål missions: “Doing business amongst friends”.  At the same time, we have claimed to represent “The Voice of Tourism”, but what does that mean?

I have considered the question often.  During the Winter Executive Committee Meeting in Raleigh -Durham, I reached an answer.

Skål International USA will be advocate for two causes beginning this year:

  •     Freedom to travel, securely; and
  •     Preservation of historical, cultural, and environmental tourism sites/monuments.

Provided the centrality of these measures to the improvement of the tourism and hospitality industries, Skål’s adoption of these advocacy goals will prove valuable for new member

Recruitment.  Please share this information with colleagues who have not yet joined the Club.

Another order of business:  I would like to extend an invitation to all members of our Club to participate in the North Americas’ Skål Congress to be held this in Playa Mujeres in Cancun Mexico from May 3 to 6.  Members are also invited to join The World Congress at the Exotic Mombasa Kenya from October 17 to 21.  Both are excellent opportunities to learn more about our wonderful organization while networking with other Skålleagues from around the world.  For additional information and to take advantage of the early registration discount, please visit skalusa.org or skal.org.

Please join us on February 28, for our monthly meeting at Karma Modern Indian Restaurant.

About Karma Modern Indian, creatively reimagines classic Indian cuisine and flavors, using locally-sourced ingredients prepared with traditional and modern cooking methods. We aim to make Indian food more approachable by introducing the traditional cuisine with contemporary plating and forward-thinking flavor profiles. Favorites like naan bread, Palak paneer and Chicken Tikka are still part of the foundation of our menu, but we’ve put a modern twist on various dishes with unexpected seasonings and ingredients like truffle oil, pesto and star fruit.

Our guest speaker for the evening is going to be our Club Secretary, Mr. Barry Biggar, President and CEO of Visit Fairfax. I know you don’t want to miss what he has to say about his tourism plan for Fairfax Country.  For registration, please visit our website skaldc.org.
