Fellow Skålleagues

A message from Skål International, Washington DC President,

Andres Hayes

Thanks Don!

I would like to thank our good friend and Skalleague Don Evans for taking the initiative to start the Clothing Drive for the Young adults of the hospitality program of Covenant House. The first drive was a huge success and we received more items during our second drive.   The third and last drive will be done on September 19, 2018 at the Columbia Marina during our annual lobster fest and I hope all members will support our great cause.

Elliott Ferguson Recipient of the Visionary Award!

DC Skalleague, Elliott Ferguson, was one of the honorees for this year Gala of the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce making him the recipient of the GWHCC Visionary Award- Elliot has the creativity which has helped our economic development in the city.

Viva el Tango!

During my recent trip to Mar del Plata Argentina, I was able to meet with the President of the Club along with other members.  During our meeting we exchanged ideas on how to increase and retain membership.  One of the values of Skål is to connect with other members throughout the world.  Before you travel to a city where there is a club, make that phone call and introduce yourself and I know you will be greeted like family.

I hope you can join us on September 19, for our monthly meeting and support once again our fellow Skalleagues that are going an extra mile to host us at their venues and delight us with delicious dishes.

Last month we were invited by our Skalleague Kristi Pruitt from Expedia to be part of their annual DC Market Forum held at the Omni Hotel.  The event was extremely successful because thanks to Randy Herron and Don Evans that were responsible for managing the Skål DC Table ,  were able to collect over fifteen business cards of potential members.   Thanks Kristi for your generous and kind opportunity and also to Randy and Don.

I would like to invite all members to the 2018 Hospitality and Tourism Forum, organized by the DC Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, September 11, 20198, from 8:00AM to 10:30AM at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW Washington DC, 2001.

The theme from this year is “Innovation in Hospitality and Tourism: with an emphasis on how technology and innovation are playing an increasingly important role in augmenting DC’s hospitality and tourism sector.

The program will also include a panel discussion by professional and practitioners in the hospitality and tourism services Industry.  We expect attendance of approximately 100 persons representing the education, financial and retail sectors in marketing, travel technology and management.

This event is free, but registration is required http://bit.ly/2KPBLID  by September 7, 2018.

I hope you can join us.

Don’t you miss your Skål friends?  After doing a review of our meeting attendance, we have found that there is a great number of members that we have not seen this year.  Surely there are personal/ health reasons that some may not attend, but there are many that this does not pertain to.  We do ask that all members try to attend a minimum of 2 meetings per year.  We hope that you can make arrangements to attend at least 1 of the 4 meetings left in 2018.  As a general rule, Skål Washington typically meets the 4th Wednesday of each month!  Of course this may change on occasion based on venue availability.  So please keep a note of this date and please try to attend!  WE MISS YOU and your camaraderie and support is important !!

Please remember to update your profile and contact information to include current business email and phone numbers.  And if you are looking to reach out to a fellow Skål member, you can always find their contact information on our website, www.skaldc.org.  Please note, the Skål International website, www.skal.org, is NOT linked to our Skål Washington website, so all company / contact information MUST be updated on both websites.  The Skål International website www.skal.org will be particularly important for international business opportunities.

Please try to add your photo to the Skål Washington website www.skaldc.org as this will help our members recognize you.

Skal USA Focuses on Transportation Infrastructure, National Parks, Easier Travel Access, and Brand USA for Its Advocacy Platform

The Executive Committee of Brand USA in its August monthly meeting determined to stress funding $1 trillion in transportation infrastructure improvements, including roads, bridges, tunnels, airports, mass transit, and intermodal connections between airports and down towns.  In a release on the subject already published or aired by hundreds of media outlets, Skal USA President Burcin Turkkan cited the need to offer first class transportation facilities and the bipartisan support generally offered for such expenditures, which was a policy feature of the 2016 Trump presidential campaign.

Endorsing other recommendations of the Skal USA Advocacy Committee, the Executive Committee also embraced continued support for public/private funding partnerships in national parks; joining efforts to restrict major increases in group tour entrance fees to national parks; endorsing legislation to fund national park infrastructure backlog repairs; allocate ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) funding for Brand USA through 2022; and continuing advocacy of freedom to travel with security, including support for the JOLT (Jobs Originated by Launching Travel) Act of 2018.

This will enhance the relevancy of Skal within the national travel industry and offer active support for work being done by some of our own club members, including Roger Dow, Chris Thompson, Pete Pantuso, Pam Inman, Morgan Maravich, Jack Johnson, and Carylann Assante.
