Fellow Skålleagues

A message from Skål International, Washington DC President,

Andres Hayes

Skål International Washington DC Club was featured in our international magazine

Just in case you missed it, on the latest issue of our international magazine, three articles were written where our Club was mentioned.  I am extremely proud that our club is getting recognition for the hard work that we are doing to promote, support and increase the membership of our organization locally, domestically and worldwide.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all members for believing in Skål DC and also the Executive Committee of our Club for the hard work they are doing to keep our club as one of the leaders within our organization.

Just in case you did not received or did not had the chance the read the articles, I have attached the link of our International magazine. https://www.skal.org/sites/default/files/media/Public/Web/PDFs/sn269.pdf

In two weeks I will share with the membership a progress report of what we have accomplished in the past 4 months and what to expect during the upcoming months.  I encourage you to register for our April event that is hosted by the Embassy of Uzbekistan, where you will learn more about that beautiful country located in Central Asia and as part of our Speaker series, you will have the opportunity to hear Ms. Pam Iman, President and CEO of NTA (National Tour Association).

P.S. Save the date May 30, 2018 for our Annual Auction Night and please find attached the invitation letter.

Have a great week!

Skal Washington Stimulates National Advocacy Role of Skal USA

In its fourth year of bringing leaders from Skal International--USA to Washington to participate with industry organizations on major national tourism policy issues, Skal Washington was part of Destination Capitol Hill, the annual Congressional lobbying effort of the travel industry, last month.

Four years ago, our club hosted Skal International President Salih Cene and Skal International USA President Martha McClintock in visiting with industry leaders under an initiative we started during my term as Regional Vice President of our national organization.

That continued in 2016 and 2017 during the visits of national president John Mavros and Holly Powers, when organizations including the American Bus Association, American Hotel & Lodging Association, American Society of Travel Agents,  Brand USA, Destination International, National Office of Travel and Tourism, National Tour Association, Student and Youth Travel Association, Sustainable Travel International, and US Travel Association, were contacted.

Most of these organizations were part of Destination Capitol Hill, when--despite a snow storm--Skal International USA President Burcin Turkkan came to Washington for the fourth year in a row of a national president's visit.  This time, however, there were meetings on Capitol Hill with members of Congress in addition to the industry leader encounters.  Burcin personally met with her delegation from Georgia, including a face to face meeting with Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights icon, to whom she presented one of her Skal presidential banners.

Skal as an organization was represented by Burcin, Skal Washington President Andres Hayes, and yours truly attending as a Skal USA delegate.  Other prominently featured Skal Washington members in attendance were US Travel President Roger Dow, who hosted the event; major sponsors Destination International Vice President Jack Johnson and National Tour Association President Pam Inman; speaker Brand USA President Chris Thompson; and delegates National Tour Association Chair Chris Babb,  Mary Lou Foley and Fairfax County Tourism guru Barry Biggar, our club secretary.

Other participating Skalleagues from around the country were pleased to see the high visibility of Skal at this event.
